Ettore Sottsass is born in 1917 in Innsbruck (Austria) and is died
the 31 december 2007.
He completes in 1939 his studies of architecture at the Polytechnic
School of Turin and settles after the war as an architect. In 1947,
he melts his own studio of design in Milan and takes care of
several projects as an architect and a designer. He takes part
several times in Triennial of art and modern architecture in Milan
like in many exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 1958, he accepts a
post as a consultant in design in Olivetti company. Among many
other projects, he draws the first Italian electronic computer,
which is born in 1959. Later, he carries out the design of various
information processing systems and bodies peripheral and designs
typewriters for great names of sector (Praxis, Tekne, Editor,
Valentine, etc). The Valentine model signed Ettore Sottsass forms
today part of the permanent bottom of the Museum of Modern art in
New York. He is interested in a new definition of domestic space by
seeking a subtle balance between the intellectual rigour of the
structures and the color, source of vitality and energy. In 1981,
Ettore Sottsass melts with his famous collaborators, several
friends and some architects the Memphis
group which very quickly becomes the spearhead of the “New
Design”. This movement attacks the “good conventional design ". The
same year, he melts the company Sottsass
Associati, within which he continues his career of architect
and designer. Works of Ettore Sottsass are in the permanent
collections of the largest museums in the world. We can admire
creations of the Milanese designer in New York, Paris, Sydney,
Denver, Stockholm, London, San Francisco, Toronto, Jerusalem and
Barcelona. The list is long distinctions, price and decreed
honorary titles with Ettore Sottsass. For exemple the title of
honorary doctor by the Royal School of the Art schools of London in
1976, the title of Officer about Arts and Letters of the French
Republic (1992), the honorary title of the School of Design of
Rhode Island in the United States (1993), the price IF of the Forum
Industry Design of Hanover (1994), the title of honorary doctor of
the Royal Academy of the Art schools of London, the price of design
of the Museum from Brooklyn in New York (1996), the Oribe price of
the Japanese city of Gifu (1997), the honorary title of the School
of the Art schools of Glasgow (1999), the honorary title of
Institute off Art of London, the honorary title rewarding best
creations as regards industrial design for the Polytechnic School
of Milan and the title of Large Ufficiale per Processes it Al
Merito, given to the designer by the president of the Italian
republic in 2001.
